Count Your Blessings

One of my favorite movies of all time is “White Christmas”.  When I hear Bing Crosby sing, I have to admit that I sigh like a typical star-struck teenager.  In the movie Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney sing a song called “Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep)”.  Unfortunately, I can’t make this devotional sing for you, but here are a few of the lyrics:

“When I'm worried and I can't sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep counting my blessings”

In today’s world of fear, especially when the things we hear about most are war and layoffs, it’s important for us to remember the good.  “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8, NIV)  God blesses us daily, and though the worries of this life make those blessings hard to see, that doesn’t mean they aren’t there.  We need to walk through our day with God’s praise on our lips and in our hearts; and as we do, His blessings will outshine our worries.  “Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.” (Psalm 84:4, NIV)
